From filmmaker to chapter books

My name is Kelly Schwarze. Welcome to my official author page. Just a little bit about me. I am mostly known for being a film director. I've been making movies for the last twenty-five years. My career has lead me to receiving Emmy Awards, directing various feature films and producing commercial content for clients all over the world. Recently, I took a shot at writing chapter books for kids.

Helping others

About six years ago, I started writing books to help aspiring filmmakers make their first films. This led me into the exciting world of being a published author. Since then, I have penned three successful filmmaking books and have sold hundreds of copies around the world.

During the pandemic, I challenged myself with a different form of storytelling. Like most folks stuck at home, I needed a creative outlet that didn’t require film production. This motivated me to create a fictional book involving a middle school kid named Myron Pesky.

Chapter books that speak from experience

Inspired by my own experiences as a child, the first story in this chapter book series, Myron Pesky and the Basketball Nightmare speaks the timeless truth to what many young readers experience. These topics include dealing with divorce, bullies, find your life's purpose, fitting in with friends, adolesent anxiety and young love.

Writing this book was so liberating that I decided to create an entire series off of this character. In fact, I have plans for five more books. The second book, Myron Pesky and the Horrible Bully will be out later this year. I plan to follow up with a third book in 2023.

Although I am new to the children’s book industry, I am dedicated to making the best quality product I can. By using my experience as a screenwriter and filmmaker, I feel that I can create a fun and positive experience for young readers.

In the meantime, I hope you will enjoy the content on this site. I will update my journey as it unfolds. I also welcome any feedback on how I can improve your experience.

Thank you!

A Filmmaking Mindset

This book is designed to offer step-by-step instructions on how to achieve long-term movie making success without having to wait for permission from Hollywood or investors. There is a bright and vibrant world of independent filmmaking yet to be conquered, and the time to think differently is now! Think with a filmmaking mindset!

“This book is packed with a lot of useful information and serves as a guide for indie filmmakers to move forward in today's ever-evolving filmmaking world. It is readable in a day or two, offers practical guidance to produce films for smaller budgets and offers a solid plan of action.”

What Film School’s Don’t Tell You

Film schools are fantastic at teaching students how to use cameras and write screenplays, but they fail to teach people what types of movies to make, how to keep your budget low, and secure profitable distribution. Each year, hundreds of people graduate from film studies programs wondering how they'll make a living in the industry. This book is the perfect guide for any filmmaker, regardless of experience. This easy and straightforward manual can help you transform your cinematic dreams into a profitable business model.

“This is a good book for DIY filmmakers starting at square one. I learned a lot from this book. I understand the artistic side of movies and have studied acting and screenwriting, but had not ventured much into the filmmaking/indie directing side of film. This was an eye opener about tasks and downfalls of an indie filmmaker.”

Filmmaking for Kids

Filmmaking is more than just picking up a camera or phone and shooting video. The true art of filmmaking is about understanding the process of telling a story through a visual form. Filmmaking for Kids is a step-by-step activity book to help parents introduce their children to the art of filmmaking and movie creation. This book offers steps on creating fun characters, developing a cool story and how to properly film and edit their video. The text also includes educational tips to help parents and teachers explain each part of the process, so children can comprehend. Filmmaking for Kids is perfect for children ages 8-12 years of age.

My 8-year-old son read this book from cover to cover from the moment it arrived on the front doorstep. He made a one-minute movie on my phone using Legos using the tips and guidance of this book. "Filmmaking for Kids" is written with kid-friendly language that is engaging, fun, and easy to understand. As a mom (and former Children's Librarian) I highly recommend this book to kids (or anyone) looking to learn about filmmaking. Your kids will be making their own movies in no time!
